This page consists of an assortment of resources that include professional organizations, journals, and a variety of media to support those in leadership roles and their colleagues in museums, historical societies, and other organizations who have dedicated their time and energy to sharing history with the public.

  • Journal: Museum Management and Curatorship
    • This is an international, peer reviewed journal that covers a wide range of topics including:
      • collections management and administration 
    • This journal aims to be useful to museum practitioners and academics alike.
    • The website is very straightforward, and there are several open access articles.
    •  Subscription costs can be found here.
  • National Council for Public History (NCPH)
    • This website provides detailed information about the field of public history in general and about the organization itself. 
    • Their flagship publication, a blog titled “History at Work,” has an especially useful bi-weekly section “Around the Field,” with topics including announcements, awards and funding, learning opportunities, and publications.
    • Other resources are organized by audience such as practitioners, educators, and students.
  • American Alliance of Museums (AAM)
    • The home page features articles categorized by topic or publication along with a featured professional network and upcoming events.
    • While the AAM provides a variety of useful resources, the Ethics, Standards and Professional Practices page seems especially helpful for museum leadership. 
    • The Resource Library boasts over 2,000 how-to guides for museum professionals, but requires membership access
  • American Association of State and Local History (AASLH)
    • Small- to medium-sized historical organizations are a primary target audience for this organization’s content and resources.
    • Their quarterly magazine, History News, and technical leaflets are especially helpful resources for museum leadership learning new skills, those needing a refresher, or seeing what other similarly sized organizations are doing.
    • Other resources include conferences, events, communities, and other publications about topics surrounding professional development, leadership and museum best practice standards.
  • National Emerging Museum Professionals Network (NEMPN)
    • NEMPN is an organization for people getting started in the field who might have a wide variety of questions.
    • Their mission statement is: To engage and support self-defined emerging museum professionals in building vibrant, equitable, and inclusive communities of networking, collaborative practice, and exchange.
    • Beginning with their “First Time with NEMPN? Start here” button leads to a very helpful overview of the organization and website.
